Bring the correct form.
Bring the Request for Live Scan Service form and instructions supplied by the organization requesting your background check. Complete your personal details and ask that organization to resolve any missing agency information before your visit.

Bring valid photo ID.
Bring valid, unexpired photo identification. California DOJ does not accept expired identification for Live Scan fingerprinting.

Confirm the total.
Confirm your total, what your requesting organization will pay, and your payment arrangements before the visit.

After your scan, keep your ATI.
Keep the Applicant Transaction Identifier (ATI) provided after your scan. You’ll need this number and your date of birth to check processing status with California DOJ.

What is Live Scan?
Live Scan captures fingerprints electronically for submission to California DOJ. An FBI check may be included when requested and authorized for the applicant’s purpose.

Office visits are by appointment only. Contact us to discuss availability for an office visit, mobile service, or an event for six or more applicants. Your inquiry does not reserve an appointment.
How much will my Live Scan cost?
Your total may include the rolling fee for taking your fingerprints, applicable DOJ/FBI processing fees, and additional service fees. Contact us for a quote for your visit or event, and check whether your requesting organization pays the government fees.

For an agency-requested check, DOJ sends the results to the requesting organization. Contact that organization to confirm receipt and discuss the next step in your application.
California DOJ: applicant guidance ↗How long does processing take?
California DOJ reports that most results are released to the requesting agency within three business days. Fingerprint quality, incorrect submission details, or additional record review can extend processing. A delay does not necessarily mean there is criminal information on your record.
This timing concerns government processing. Your fingerprinting visit and your organization’s final decision are separate steps. When an FBI check is required, it has its own review process.
